details and application instructions for the teaching opportunity in jeonnam

Recently, the Asian Affairs Center has been given the opportunity to help Missouri ’s sister-province, Jeollanam-do (or Jeonnam Province ) in South Korea, to find motivated individuals to teach for one month in one of three English language immersion camps this summer. This team of individuals will consist of 24 instructors from the Columbia community and 24 instructors from the Portland, Oregon community. All visiting instructors will be team teaching with an experienced Korean English teacher from the area.

Jeonnam Province is striving to increase the quality of life among those of their community, especially by strengthening their English language education. With the increasing use of English in Korea and the globe, it is necessary for people of all backgrounds to have access to quality English education. This summer camp pursues this goal by offering this service at a minimal cost to elementary and junior high school students in their province.

If you are interested in helping Jeonnam in their community effort by being a native English instructor, or if you have any questions, please contact Ms. Lesley Sapp at (573) 882-9430 or sappLj@missouri.edu

To apply, please mail or fax the following materials (contact information on application): signed application (Word doc), essay, resume and references.

Materials must be received before March 31, 2008 in order to be considered!

Participating in this special program will benefit the instructors as much as it will benefit the students and residents in this area. For those that desire to travel or to learn more about Asian culture, this is a perfect chance to do both while earning a bit of pocket money and international work experience at the same time. Jeonnam Province will provide round-trip airfare, on-location orientation and training, a stipend of approximately USD $700, accident insurance, a variety of cultural excursions, and accommodations.

The program will begin with a week of orientation and training in mid-July, followed by approximately 10 days of camp for junior high students and 10 days of camp for elementary students, with the camp ending around August 18, 2008.

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (please note that all majors will be considered) and be a native English speaker with citizenship from an English speaking country. The process of application includes an overview of resume and references, interview, double background check, and final approval from Jeonnam Province officials. After acceptance, there will be a USD$250 administrative fee, which will cover (among other things) visa processing and training and orientation materials locally. Upon arrival in Korea , you will be required to submit to a medical check, including at TB test and HIV/AIDS test, as well as a drug screening.
